Talaga and Mind's Eye

their performances at festivals such as the Montreux Jazz
Festival in Switzerland and the Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival
in Michigan to any of their four CDs, the jazz quartet, Mind's
Eye, specializes in original cutting-edge jazz compositions.
Steve Talaga, co-leader of Mind's Eye, has a 25 year
performing career as a pianist, composer and arranger. This
concert features jazz works from their CDs Children of
the Glacier, Lucky Nine, Seasons, and
Angst for the Spoiler.

The
Chicago-based group Eastern Blok is a quartet featuring
acoustic nylon-string guitar virtuoso Goran Ivanovic, jazz multi-
instrumentalist Douglas Rosenberg, upright bassist Matthew Ulery,
and drummer Michael Caskey. Influenced by jazz, classical, gypsy,
and klezmer sensibilities, their concert will draw from works
from their new 2007 CD release entitled Folk Tales
which features compositions by Goran Ivanovic and Douglas Rosenberg
as well as group arrangements/improvisations of traditional
folk music from the Balkans (especially Macedonia, Bulgaria
and Serbia).

Grand
Rapids Cantata Choir

The Grand
Rapids Cantata Choir is a 35 voice mixed choir from West
Michigan. Suzanne Tiemstra, the founder and conductor of the
group who specializes in choral music from Latin America,
will conduct a holiday concert of Latin American Christmas
music.

Shakuhachi
Grand Master Michael Gould

Chikuzen Gould began learning the shakuhachi, the Zen flutes
of Japan in 1982 in Kyoto under the guidance of world renowned
masters Mr. Yoshinobu Taniguchi and Mr. Yokoyama Katsuya.
In 1991 he earned the title of Dai Shihan (Grand Master),
one of only a half dozen nonnative Japanese to do so. Since
returning to the U.S. in 1996, he has made over 400 appearances.
Mr. Gould will present a lecture recital on the shakuhachi
with Brian Hedeen, a percussionist, singer, and sound synthesist
that joins Mr. Gould on Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, piano,
and synthesizer.

Songwriter Dean Windemuller

Guitarist
and singer songwriter from Dorr, Michigan, Dean Windemuller,
will give a world premier performance of his original composition,
Social Justice Suite, for voice, guitar, and chamber
ensemble, commissioned by MAJIC. Dean Windemuller’s
music is influenced by jazz, classical, and fingerstyle blues.
After studying and performing in Chicago, Dean Windemuller
returned to his native West Michigan in August of 2005 and
began a steady performance career as an acoustic blues and
folk artist performing with the Grand Rapids based tango group,
Tango Folias, and the Chicago based jazz group Open Land.

Duo Sunny Wilkinson and Ron Newman

Michigan
State University’s assistant professor of vocal jazz,
Sunny Wilkinson, will be joined by jazz pianist Professor
Ron Newman for an evening of voice and piano jazz duets featuring
music from Sunny Wilkinson’s 2006 CD release A Gentle
Time. Wilkinson’s wide range, intonation, agility,
and passion for what she sings make her a one-of-a-kind vocalist.
Wilkinson performs regularly at jazz festivals and clubs across
the country. Her performance credits include singing with
the Count Basie Band, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, Kenny
Wheeler, Mark Murphy, Milt Hinton, Marvin Stamm, Bill Mays,
Bill Watrous, Curtis Fuller, and Edgar Winter, among others.

The Grand
Rapids Guitar Quartet was formed in 2006 by Brian Morris,
Jason Werkema, Andrew Bergeron, and Michael Stockdale, then
the four faculty guitar teachers at Grand Rapids Community
College. Their MAJIC concert debut presents original classical
music transcriptions and the world premier of Andrew Bergeron's
composition Argentine Dance Suite, written espeically
for the group.

Folias
Latin Dance Project

Andrew
Bergeron and Carmen Maret of Folias combine with composer
and percussionist Scott Harding and flutist Tess Miller for
an evening of original compositions and arrangements of Latin
and South American dance music. The group will present Scott
Harding’s work Tango Fantasy, Andrew Bergeron’s
arrangement of the Buenos Aires Four Seasons by Astor Piazzolla
for two tango flutes, guitar, and percussion, and Carmen Maret’s
arrangements of traditional dance music from Dominican Republic,
Venezuela and Argentina.
